One of our first projects as a business was to host an artist residency. In December 2014, before our building was fully renovated, we hosted Esmeralda Conde Ruiz, a composer and performance artist based in London for a month long residency. Esmeralda created a powerful performance inspired by matriarchy and the wisdom of aging. Abuela was a song cycle created through interviews with local grandmothers. Highlighting the incredible font of wisdom and experience that can be found in an aging population like Stuart's, Esmeralda created a haunting work filled with pathos, love, and admiration for these amazing women.
Esmeralda has recently continued her work on Abuela in London, holding workshops and interviewing British grandmothers. A performance including new work as well as songs created during her residency at Ground Floor Farm was recently featured at the Women of the World Festival at the Southbank Centre.
